Youth Emergency Service assists runaway and homeless youth in need of immediate shelter.  Many are referred by the Philadelphia Department of Human Services, but others come on their own.

At Youth Emergency Service, help includes:

  • Around-the-clock emergency shelter and protection for youth
    ages 12-17
  • Telephone hotline and referral services
  • Medical exams and follow-up
  • Mental health services
  • Voluntary and confidential HIV/AIDS testing
  • Counseling for teens and family members
  • Intensive program for youth and families to preserve the family unit
  • Supervised educational and recreational programs
  • Outreach to parents, children and community agencies

The Runaway Youth Program 

RYP is a walk-in or call-in program that operates 24 hours a day and is staffed by experienced social workers. RYP staff work with adolescents and their families to resolve conflicts and keep children safe.  Short-term individual and family counseling is available, as well as critical referral services. 

The RYP hotline provides over the phone crisis counseling, critical referral services and immediate access to the Youth Emergency Service.

RYP also offers a 12-week intervention program for at-risk teens and their families.  RYP staff works closely in the homes of families at least twice a week, providing counseling and support services to resolve issues and avoid crisis situations.
