Crisis Nurseries

Youth Service, Inc. pioneered the Crisis Nursery Program in Philadelphiawhen it established the first Crisis Nursery in 1990.  Crisis Nurseries offer parents and caregivers free emergency care for children in a safe and nurturing environment.

YSI operates two Crisis Nursery Programs, Baring House and Sally Watson Center, located in West Philadelphia and Germantown.  The Crisis Nurseries provide 24-hour emergency care for families with very young children, newborn through five years of age.

Lily*, a bubbly toddler, is one of the many children served by the Crisis Nursery Program last year.  Lily's mom, Tina*, was 8 months pregnant with her second child, and was worried about finding a reliable caretaker for her daughter. After being admitted to the hospital, Tina's nurse referred her to Baring House Crisis Nursery. A YSI social worker came soon after to pick-up Lily, who stayed at Baring House for three days until she was able to rejoin her Mom and new baby brother at home.

The Crisis Nursery Programs provide short-term assistance, but have long-term impact by strengthening families and connecting them to community resources.
